Soft Tissue Mobilization

Target tight, overworked muscles and tissues with personalized hands-on care designed to support healing, mobility, and a return to the activities that matter to you.

What Is Soft Tissue Mobilization?

Whether you are preparing for a marathon, competition, recital, or big game, training asks a lot of your muscles and tissues. The dedication it takes to perform well can also lead to pain and soreness that temporarily interrupts your training process.

Soft Tissue Mobilization/Massage is commonly used for Salt Lake City athletes whose muscles have experienced extended periods of overuse. It helps loosen tight areas and can make recovery quicker and easier—so you can get back on track to accomplishing your end goal.

At Cutting Edge Physical Therapy, a highly trained physical therapist will create a personalized treatment plan based on what is best for you.

Your Soft Tissues and You

Your muscles are made up of many small, thin fibers that contract on command and work together to mobilize muscle groups. Muscles attach to bones through connective tissues called tendons. Bones connect through ligaments for stability, and ligaments are covered by fascia. Together, these structures are commonly called soft tissues.

Soft tissues help mobilize joints and give your body the strength it needs to perform tasks. Repeated athletic actions and other stresses can damage them. A tendon tear can lead to swelling and inflammation, while a ligament stretched farther than intended can result in a sprain.

When Tightness Gets in the Way

Injuries can occur in response to the intensity of a sport, but they can also occur when muscles are too tight before a workout begins. Soft Tissue Mobilization/Massage works to loosen muscles and may help prevent some of these injuries from occurring.

Our physical therapists consider your individual needs and the demands of your sport when building a plan of care. The goal is to help you move more comfortably and prepare your tissues for the work you want to do.

Benefits for Recovery and Performance

Soft Tissue Mobilization/Massage promotes tissue healing so you can get back to your sport of choice as quickly as possible. It may also be used before a rigorous exercise regimen to target the specific muscles and tissues that see the most use in your sport.

Mobilize and Loosen

Working to mobilize, loosen, and relax heavily used muscles before training can help them stay limber throughout the process.

Support Injury Prevention

Keeping tissues limber may decrease your risk of strains, sprains, and ruptures associated with demanding activity and tight muscles.
