Put Your Whole Foot Into It (Physical Therapy!)
Standing, walking, and staying active should not be incredibly painful or limited. Our physical therapists identify the root cause of your foot pain and create a plan to help you get back to the life you love.
Foot pain can make regular routines feel challenging. The foot has 26 bones, 30 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Walking, balance, and overall mobility depend on these structures working together with the right coordination and timing. When any part of the system is off, pain and dysfunction can follow.
Some pain begins suddenly after an injury; other symptoms develop gradually from chronic overuse or an underlying condition. At Cutting Edge Physical Therapy, we help patients in Salt Lake City and Murray find relief for many types of foot pain without medications, injections, or surgery.
Getting help sooner rather than later can make a meaningful difference. Our team will assess what is contributing to your symptoms and help you move comfortably again.
Foot pain has many possible causes. These are some conditions our physical therapists evaluate and address through individualized care.
A sprain involves an overstretched or torn ligament, while a strain involves an overstretched muscle or tendon. These injuries often happen after stepping awkwardly or landing funny and should be evaluated to support a timely recovery.
Tendinopathy is any problem involving a tendon, including disease, injury, or disorder. Tendinitis can cause swelling and pain with movement and is often associated with repetitive stress or overuse.
The plantar fascia connects the heel bone to the toes. Plantar fasciitis causes pain at the bottom, inner aspect of the heel and is often worse after non-weight-bearing periods, such as first thing in the morning or after prolonged sitting.
Neuropathy is a diseased state of nerves that can be associated with diabetes, medication toxicity such as chemotherapy, or circulation issues. Changes in foot sensation may make injuries harder to notice and can contribute to balance issues and falls.
Arthritis affects joints and can cause inflammation and foot pain. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can damage cartilage over time, limit range of motion, and significantly affect foot joints and function.
A fracture occurs when excessive force causes a bone to crack or break. Repetitive stresses, including long-distance running, can also contribute. A foot fracture may require rest and, in some cases, a cast or walking boot for healing.
Bursae are fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction and protect tendons from bone. Injury or overuse can inflame these sacs, preventing smooth tendon movement and causing painful or debilitating symptoms in the foot or heel.
Foot arches rely on coordinated support from tendons, bones, joints, and muscles. A fallen arch or flat foot occurs when those structures cannot properly stabilize the arch and may lead to foot, shin, or knee pain due to gait changes.
The tarsal tunnel is a groove where a nerve travels from the lower leg through the ankle to the foot. Irritation or pinching can cause sharp, shooting pain, burning, or “pins and needles” sensations in the feet.
At your initial consultation, a Cutting Edge Physical Therapy therapist will perform a thorough assessment to identify the cause of your foot discomfort and create a customized treatment plan. Our initial goals are to improve joint mobility, reduce pain, and build strength in the lower leg and foot.
Your plan may include targeted hands-on techniques, such as joint mobilizations and soft tissue work, along with exercises to improve balance, coordination, and gait. We may also use stretches, modalities, and compression to support circulation and help your body heal.
We regularly review your plan as you progress. When appropriate, we may suggest lifestyle adjustments and recommend inserts or custom orthotics to help prevent future difficulties or reinjury.
You will receive an individualized evaluation and treatment plan in a private treatment room. Our physical therapists and assistants provide high-quality hands-on care with the goal of helping you regain mobility, strength, and overall function.
